Javier as Roland?

While I think Javier Bardem is a great actor and could easily perform as Roland, I am still on the fence as far as his appearance.

Some are probably calling fowl on that last statement, mainly about why would looks really matter.

As far as Roland is concerned though, they do.

Javier has that old weathered look that is crucial, but he also has a certain... density to his person that gives the idea that you just don't want to mess with this guy. In other words, he's fairly buff. Roland however was a character that as I read I pictured him as a gaunt man of small stature, one that most bullies would single out in order to make an example of.

Then he slings out the guns and quickly makes with the bloody violence.

That subtle quirk of hidden danger is what I am looking for.

Breaking the annual thing

Oh snap!

Alright, I am going to take a break on the whole silliness thing here and hang out in the more refined side of things for a minute.

A very good friend of mine not only started up a Media strategy and development company but he is also making it a success, a difficult task in these economic times.

Here is their demo reel and website.
http://www.kertiscreative.com/

Seriously take a look at some of their work, I've known Stephen since college and he has always surprised me with his depth of talent and scope of vision.

annual posting

So it looks like this thing has turned into a yearly blog post.

The book report project ended up being dumped, something more important came up for me (Which when placed in context to writing about Twilight, doesn't take much.) And Jess decided to read like fifty different books at the same time.

In the spirit of the project however I'll go ahead and give at least some idea of how I felt about the book.

It sucked.

Bad writing about an empty character that the reader can basically imagine themselves as and somehow enthralls a hundred year old immortal that shimmers like a Lisa Frank pencil on glitter crack when in direct sunlight apparently makes for a huge popular hit.

Why am I not surprised?

I think it's ok that people can read this thing and enjoy it, there are PLENTY of books that I have read and really enjoyed that were just as bad.

But honestly? All this craze about the characters and actors portraying them? Stupidity is apparently running unchecked in the universe that we currently occupy.

The only way I could really get through the book was to read the text with the mindset that Bella was just a schizophrenic and Edward was the awkward kid at school willing to go along with her ramblings about Vampires because he was already rejected by all the other girls in school.

It actually makes sense if you think about.

Also if you completely ignore the other books written afterwards.

Which I plan on doing......

And I think you should too.

Finally!

The following post was posted by Jess.

I have finally finished The Gunslinger. Due to sickness it took me 3 weeks to finally get through. Now I need to write this report.

Hopefully this doesn't take another 3 weeks!

Round one

Twilight = DONE.

Report in progress.

Let's see some hustle Jess.

July 4th 2010

Went to the stock car races on friday, then went to a homtown baseball game and had a hotdog and beer, fireworks followed on Saturday.
Today I visited the Corvette museum, and tonight I am going to grill out then detonate enough explosives to level a third world village.

I am so American that I feel that I should find a French kid and punch him in the face and force him to thank me for liberating his crouscant eating butt.

Excruciatingly happy words...

I'm half way through Twilight, or as I like to call it Fun with Adjectives and made up words.

Like "Handsomer" which technically is a word but I refuse to recognize it as such because it's dumb.

Fitting....really.

I hope Jess is enjoying the Gunslinger.........

The Gunslinger

The following post was posted by Jess.

I have started my book "The Gunslinger" by Stephen King. My first impression so far is who in the world is the man in black and why is the gunslinger hellbent on catching him?

My favorite part so far? Zoltan

Wondering how Josh is doing with "Twilight". I hope he doesn't follow suit with the rest of the world and falls in love with Edward Cullen. Bwhaha.

What IS TAABP?

TAABP stands for The Amazingly Academic Book Project and here is what it is and how it got started.

My sister asked to borrow a specific book and when she did two ideas immediately struck me.

The first being that out of fun (and in all seriousness of holding her to it) I placed a condition that she write a book report about the book in question, the second was that such a thing would be great to post up on here.

So wallah, TAABP was born. The rules that she and I came up with together are in an earlier post so you can find them there.

The thing to keep in mind though is that these reports are not the sort you would turn into a teacher and expect a passing grade, brutality and humor are the goal. Also, while the first round has books that most would consider good to at least some group, the immediate goal this summer is to find the most horrific and absurd books we can and force the other to read and then report on them.

I already have a BMD (Book of Mass Destruction) in mind in case Jess decides to throw down the heavy stuff early on in the project.

Anyways, Jess has been invited to post up on here so you may see her around.

TAABP Round 1

I have been given the book "Twilight"

Jess will be reading "The Gunslinger."

Already the deck is stacked against me.

The Amazingly Academic Book Project

THE RULES

1. Selected books must be Fiction.

2. There are no minimal page requirements, however, they can not exceed 600 pages.

3. You MUST read at least 75%, the rest can be skimmed.

5. Watching the movie DOES NOT COUNT. Duh. (Neither Do Audio Books)

6. Reports are not to exceed five paragraphs.

7. Reports MUST include a synopsis, at least one basic character analysis, and a general reflection.

8. Humor and brutality is encouraged.

9. YOU MAY NOT CHOOSE YOUR OWN BOOK!!!!!!!! Your assignment will be given to you.

10. Reports should be completed in a timely manner based on the book and it's generally perceived difficulty level.

11. Any rule can be exempted on the basis of awesome epicness. Argument must be given and agreed upon unanimously prior to report being made.

Let the Book Reports Begin!

I would totaly tip this guy

I saw this pic on digg and they were pointing out the dude with the puffed out cheeks.

I want to know why they didn't notice Darth Clown...you know.. the guy on the very far left.

With his body posture and what looks like a box in his hands I like to imagine he's striding up to my house to deliver some hot delicious cookies..........

Hmm.... Dark Side Cookies...

Really?

I find it very offensive, and telling in our society with the pretentiousness of it all that during the past THREE weeks of the constant Michael Jackson Coverage the following has happened in the world and yet has taken a back seat media wise so that our society could grind to a halt for that man.

Nothing has been politically resolved in Iran and yet people continue to protest and are ignored, due to the continued media black out, we know nothing of what is happening to the populace. The Iranian police has said however any new protests will be "smashed."

On June 28th Honduras underwent a military Coup and replaced the elected government with another government and clashes with troops and supporters of the elected president left at least one person dead. Nearly all major world governments have denounced this coup.

On June 30th, a day came that most people have demanded for the past six years, a total U.S. troop withdrawal from all Iraqi cities. While it's not a complete withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq as a nation, it is a major checkpoint towards that goal. However, on the darker side, on July 9th over 50 people were killed in suicide bombings (some being coordinated dual bombings), the worst since the U.S. withdrawal.

On July fourth, North Korea Launched seven missiles into the Sea of Japan in direct violation of UN resolutions. On that same day, several US government agencies, along with the White house, New York Stock exchange, and the department of defense as well as several South Koren government agencies were targeted by a coordinated cyber attack that continued for at least four days. The US has declined to release details of the attack, but South Korea's media has reported that North Korea may be behind the attacks in some way.

On July 5th the Muslim minority living in the Xinjiang province gathered to protest and demand justice. It's still unclear as to what exactly happened but the facts remain that violence erupted with the situation now being that somewhere around 1,000 people have been wounded, hundreds are dead and thousands of Chinese troops are now on the streets in some way to contain the ongoing violence.

On July 9th the U.S. and Russia took steps towards a new period of peace and stability as both countries agreed to cut their nuclear arsenal to bellow 1,7000. A U.S. official has said that there is an informal link between this deal and Russia's and the U.S's attempts to place pressure on Iran and it's nuclear program.

I am in no way saying that we should not honor the memory of someone.

I am saying that three weeks (and counting) of coverage that gave almost every single second to talking about that man, his vices, his scandals, his disgruntled family, his eccentricities, etc, while giving only a cursory mention to the above events is a very very sad indication of our society.

Where are our priorities?

Flux opperates on 1.21 jigs

May I present Flux, the newest member to our little family.

Flux enjoys eating flies, eating his own tail, purring LOUDLY, head butting, scaring himself with whatever he can find, and plotting to gain access to the restricted areas of the house.

He's pretty slick about that last one. The first couple of times he tries the direct approach, where he just decides that he's going into the bathroom, and walks right in. At which point he is removed and told no. Phase two of his ingenious plan is to use stealth. Where apparently if he moves slowly enough then I won't be able to see him, as if I'm a T-Rex or something. Or at least, that's how it works in his world. In our world, he is removed and once again told no.

His final attempt is by far my favorite. Flux will position himself at a safe distance from the door he wants to access but close enough to where he still has a clear view of it. He waits patiently for someone to open the door for themselves, and then he makes his move like a bolt of lightening. With a loud pop (which can only be the sound barrier yielding to his awesomeness) he takes off in a blur of gray and muscles his way into the door using brute force.

He hasn't tried this yet with trying to get into where we store the food, but then again, he could just be doing all of this to keep us occupied while he works on his true plan. That devious cat.

1.21 Jigawatts!

Today we bring home the newest addition to the family. Flux. Right now his cat carrier is kinda boring, but keeping with his name sake.... that will all change.....

I won't post any concept pictures or anything, but I will say that if he reaches 88 mph in that thing, all bets are off.

Something from left Field

Last night was a sort of "Fend for yourself night" as far as dinner goes.

What did my wife have? Two portobello mushroom tops with spinach and cheese.

And myself?

Microwaved skyline chilly, 7 fish sticks, and three doughnuts.

Yeah, I win at being healthy.

Ima gonna eat my gold medal

For those who wonder if we as a society are losing our freaking minds.....

Wonder no more:

When the officials wreath the athletes with their medals at the next Olympics, I think they should say "Congratulations, do you want fries with that?"

Dang it Fandango....

Movies.com used to be my major source for mainstream film info. Ratings, reviews, even upcoming buzz. Notice the bold there. Yea, you know where this is going to end up.

Apparently movies.com was bought by Fandango and then "incorporated" into the "fandango family." And by incorporated I mean completely tossed from the car as it barreled down the interstate doing 125 and revamped to be nothing more than a slightly different looking portal for Fandango. Click just about anywhere on that site, and you end up at Fandango.com with a tiny banner reminding you that Fandango is now Movies.com's pimp.

The short of it? Movies.com is now useless. It's nothing more than some homeless guy hanging out front yelling at you trying to convince you to walk into his trashy bar and spend $9.00 on a beer.

6/26/2008

Oh Carlton.....

Weren't the 80's great? I mean it gave us shows like Captain Caveman, Today's Special, and of course, who could ever forget Voltron! (A.k.a Optimus Prime's moon-lighting gig.)

Of course as kids, we gobbled this crap up like it was pure white sugar. We didn't care that the Cap'n was nothing more than a dirty, smelly old homeless guy hanging around three hot teen "angels." Seriously, I think this show was produced by a couple of weird adult industry rejects. Just check out this episode, complete with bad porn music, the station sign reads "KXXX," and the Cap'n and his crew are on the "Bunny" show. Obviously someone had a grand ol' time sending stuff way over the heads of us kids back in the 80's.

And if we thought the Cap'n was as bad as it got, lets not forget your friend and mine.... the Shmoo, I don't even really need to explain to you what all is wrong with this cartoon.....

And Today's Special? I LOVED that show as a kid. Why? I have no clue, but oddly enough a few years later I would fall in love with Kim Cattrall as she too played the inspiring role of the store Mannequin forced to live out the day in a window only to turn into a real live person at night. She was HOT, and I was a confused 8 year old. Between these two programs my sense of reality was seriously skewed enough for me to not complain as much when Mom dragged me into the clothing stores.

Anyways, all of that was just to give me an excuse to show you this clip of Cousin Carlton's commercial for his own brand of break dancing.

See more funny videos at CollegeHumor

It's a real gem (And the Holograms.... uh oh!)

Alright, that's it, I'm done, no more 80's videos.

Oh SNAP! I lied!
